Doctors Are Euthanizing Patients Without Their Consent
A study published this month in the Journal of Medical Ethics examined the “deliberate” euthanasia of patients in Belgium without their explicit, voluntary consent as required by law.

The study’s author, Raphael Cohen-Almagor, a professor of philosophy and ethics at the United Kingdom's Hull University, found that life-ending drugs were used “with the intention to shorten life and without explicit request” in 1.7 percent of all deaths in Belgium in 2013.

In 52.7 percent of these cases, the patients were 80 years of age or older. The decision to euthanize was not discussed with the patient in 77.9 percent of the cases because he/she was comatose, had dementia, or “because discussion would have been harmful to the patient’s best interest,” according to the study.

Belgium passed the Euthanasia Act in 2002, which states that only voluntary euthanasia is legally permissible. ...

Our western culture has succomed to the culture of death. The scriptures teach us that suffering is useful and helps believers in santification conforming us to the image of Christ The state aught not put end to suffering for the sake of convienence. These doctors have blood on their hands and need to repent of the crime of killing these people. These end of life decisions need to be made by the family not medical doctors that are state agents assessing the value of human life. Putting cost and money ahead of people made in the image of God.

Yes in UK we have similar to living wills ( I forget what they are called). I don't think they hold a lot of legal power though.

This is an incredibly tricky area. Most drs I know would consider euthanasia abhorrent but have a thought for those in positions to make these decisions. Would you find it easy to treat a very sick person when you think about these issues ?
I think we should protect and extend life as long as it is possible. Now if a patient refuses treatment, then as you know that would be a form of suicide that doctors are not responsible for. Many times relatives who are given permission make that sort of decision for their loved ones and once again, the doctors are not responsible for that either. In the U.S. they use living wills to determine much of those issues. If memory serves me correctly you actually are in the medical field so you would probably know more about what actually takes place then the rest of us. Now, I think it is never and I mean never the responsibility of the physician to make the decision whether someone lives or dies. They can treat and advise and that is all. Once we open up Pandora’s Box, then we have physicians taking lives instead of saving them.

I understand my thoughts are overly simplistic.

Exodus 20:12

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Ephesians 6 points out this is the first command with a promise.
