Newsweek: Jesus Was Crucified Because Disciples Were Armed?
Jesus may have been crucified because his followers were carrying weapons, according to a scholarly analysis of New Testament books.

Dale Martin, a professor of religious studies at Yale University, says that this aspect of stories about Jesus, as told in the gospels, has received too little attention, but could alone explain Jesus’s execution and also show that the man from Nazareth was not the pacifist he’s usually made out to be.

The biblical books of Mark and Luke both state that at least one (and probably two or more) of Jesus’s followers was carrying a sword when Jesus was arrested shortly after the Last Supper, at the time of the Jewish festival of Passover. One disciple, Simon Peter, even used his sword to cut off the ear of one of those arresting Jesus, according to the Gospel of John. ...

Must be they got confused by that sharper than a two edged sword thing. And all that armor the disciples put on.

Satan will try anything to remove the Bible as the Word of God.

Even getting his followers to make up really stupid ideas about the Gospel.

Without faith the reprobate cannot receive the truth.

"1Thes 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe."

"2Thes 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:"

Read the article with discerning eyes and you will notice how man, dead spiritually, cannot understand scripture. Everything is viewed through the lense of materalism (what is seen is all there is) and politics. Politics is the religion and Government its god. Yet, this article shoukd confirm our faith because Christ still "draws all men" to Himself. He remains the central, peculiar figure of universal human history. Soli Deo Gloria!

This is typical tabloid sensationalism, where you have a shocking title with little factual substance. I doubt most people bother to read a full article anymore and form their opinions from the headlines alone.

Jesus was crucified to save us from our sins.

He alone paid for what you and I deserve for our sins. We are guilty,

Thanks to Jesus... we can have eternal life and be forgiven.

So simple, yet we make it so hard by over thinking it.

NewsWeek....really? If Douglas Main had read any of the gospels he would never have written this piece. The editor's should have checked the gospels for accuracy. If this is the best NW can investigate than better to fold up house.
The Sanhedrin was plotting to kill Jesus well before "Good Friday" . They wanted him dead because specifically he claimed to be God. They didn't find out Peter had a knife (not a sword...check the Greek word) until AFTER they came to arrest Jesus. Duh! The knife had nothing to do with anything.
Then....when he was in trial before Caiphus and Ananias the high priests and then Pilate and then Herod and then back to Pilate....can you believe it? NOBODY mentions the knife...
Peter was even sitting at the same fire wither the guards and the servants of the high priest...they recognized him but didn't arrest him or even try....why? Because the knife didn't mean squat! The Deitu of the Christ, Jesus was the issue. When they even had to make up charges to get Pilate interested... They said that he first: refused to pay taxes and second: that he was a king before Caeser.
This article wasn't even clever in it's attempt to secularize the human life of Jesus.
