Bill Maher Excoriates the God of the Old Testament — and Says Worshiping Him Is ‘Insane’

When recently asked by The Atlantic’s Scott Stossel if he ever thinks about “Pascal’s wager” — the notion that he could be wrong and dooming himself to hell by rejecting God — Maher said, essentially, that that was the least of his worries.

“Of all the reasons to be religious, that is the one of the dumber ones. What if I’m wrong? If it is the God of the Old Testament, I am so ***** already, and you and everybody else,” Maher said.

He continued, “A more psychopathic character you will not ever find in fiction. Just the idea that people worshiped the God of this Bible is insane. There is no more psychopathic mass murderer than God, so good luck with worrying that you picked the wrong religion, you’re going to suffer for it.” ...

I agree SJ:

"Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood."

When it came to the Canaanites, they were irretrievably corrupted. They were past redemption. Of course God ways are above our ways and understanding, so we have to take His Word for it. However, this is in the past, and we received continuing Revelation on what man can do to get right with God, and that is to go up ]]The Roman Road.

God has not become all soft and gooey in the New Testament if Bill and others think they are going to have better time of it than the Canaanites, because the Book of Revelation tells us the awful fate of deniers of Christ, both in the Tribulation, and all of those before, ]]The Consequences of Not Believing.

By the way, I liked, very much, the comments before mine.

Once again the pot is yelling at the potter, not just about how he himself was made but how all the other pots were made.

Can't wait 'till God comes back and finally shuts these people up for good.

Bill Maher is a classic example of not just wicked unbelief but gross ignorance of the whole content of scripture! And the fact is that God has given us a book that deliberately draws out and reveals the fallen and corrupt nature of sin found in all of us! The heart is exposed and the Bible is proven true that we are haters of God and born liars who will not have this man, Christ Jesus to reign over us. For men love darkness rather than light!

Bill is just speaking out of ignorance. Perhaps he never read what God said through the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the Lord,
“Though your sins are as scarlet,
They will be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They will be like wool.
Yeah, that sounds like an evil God doesn't it? That's sarcasm. :-)

that is because God promised them a Messiah and land for thousands and thousands of years and they have not seen their salvation! (they've been waiting since, what the time of King David??).... instead of seeing that the Messiah already came and salvation is available for both Jew and Gentile, they rather see that this God has not delivered on His promises...

praying for their eyes to be opened.

One day all knees will bow to Christ, either in a condition of redemption or judgment.

Today is the day of salvation.

No mistake about it, those wanting to help Jewish people through wores and political strong arming do not know the gospel and its power, nor have they listened to many Jewish groups against Zionism to take a great offense at evangelicals getting in their business.

Time to get back the New Testament. It holds the answers for mankind, for whoever will hear.

Sadly, I am seeing more and more people blaspheming what they perceive to be: "The God of The Old Testament." This is not only an insult to God, but an insult to practising Jewish persons. Moreover, for the Jewish people The Old Testament is called "The Torah," and is their Holy Scriptures.

All nations have laws, yet people take an offence to The Law that was handed down to the Israelites through Moses. And, though many Historians study wars which happened throughout the ages, people take offence to The Old Testament/Torah containing histories of wars which happened in the ancient world.

People confuse The Bible's documentation of The Law and war as merciless edicts, yet every civilized society has both laws (which don't always seem fair but have their place), and have libraries containing the gruesome violent details of war.

The Old Testament/Torah contains Law, History, Instruction (both explicit and implicit), Prophesies, Prayers, Praise, Science, Corporate Responsibility, and how to handle Social issues such as poverty. Therein, is not only wisdom for one's personal life, but wisdom how to operate Nations with integrity.

So Bill says that Pascals wager is the least of worries, will that be true when he is taking his last breath, this man is typical of the entertainment class, arrogant and self important and sure that since he is on TV and God isn't his babbling trumps the word of God.....dust with a little water added....there remains no excuse for him and he will just have to die and find out.

He reminds me of Christopher Hitchins or Hucthins who died of Cancer,he was arrogant and cocky right up to the end and spent his life ridiculing Christians and denying the existence of God....what is he saying right now ?

The ironic thing is, that given Bill Mahers worldview, he has no way of justifying his claim that God is morally reprehensible, since he doesn't believe in any absolute standard of moral authority.

But he does know in his conscience as do all of mankind that God exists.Thats what Romans 1:18-32 tells us ,Gs. He is without excuse!!

no religion, I guess, dad was catholic, mom jewish. but if salvation is through race, then he's jewish despite being atheist.... the kind of crazy way to theology through politics. what he needs to read is the New Testament, then he could understand the Old, without the Messiah, God has failed, left the world in Chaos, but He hasn't because the Messianic scriptures are fulfilled in Christ and His atoning work on the cross and resurrection.

His behavior is very offensive. He is however a sinner in need of the Savior! I pray that God would grant Him repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Ah the good ole aethist proof text for getting out if having to believe in the Lord
1 Sam 15
Now I wonder if he read the companion verse
Deuteronomy 25:17-19
For surely he is not excusing a more wretched and hienous act to condemn a righteous act, he wouldn't do that would he?

Welcome back, TeenC.

Amazing how so many are in utter darkness. Such darkness that they have no qualms about blaspheming the God of the Bible, painting irreverent pictures of Christ, or spending their time and money trying to convince rhe younger generation that there is no God...never was. Amazing to me how many believe life came to be; amazing, complicated life forms, the perfect universal balance which supports that life, the defense mechanisms specific to each life form, along with the irreducible complexity of the not so simple cell.
