Newt Gingrich defeated Mitt Romney in the South Carolina primary Saturday night, handing the former House speaker a remarkable comeback victory that his supporters hope will reset the Republican presidential race nationwide.
The Associated Press and multiple television networks all projected that Gingrich would defeat Romney and far outdistance Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, the latest sign of remarkable volatility in a GOP primary season that has seen three contests won by three different candidates.
