SBC name change study sparks lively debate
The announcement from Southern Baptist Convention President Bryant Wright of a presidential task force to study the prospect of changing the convention's name sparked a lively debate during the SBC Executive Committee meeting Sept. 19 in Nashville, Tenn.

Executive Committee member Darrell P. Orman, pastor of First Baptist Church in Stuart, Fla., offered a motion that convention attorneys study the issue for one year "before we take any action" on possibly changing the name. The motion later failed on a 39-20 vote.

"Every man here wants to do something significant in his life for Christ and His Kingdom," Orman said. "A name change could be a future necessity for our convention but it should start from the bottom up, not the top down." ...

After reading a bit of James P Boyce from his systematic theology, I can say that the theology (and consequential political stands on eternal wores being justified) of the SBC has changed from how it began.

There are two threads now running through the convention. One for globalism, the other for a historical view of Christianity that's focus, source, and celebration is Christ alone and from that His believing Bride.

The world is watching and makes assumptions about the "religion" of Christianity---representative of a generation that has some truth, but at the same time is so absorbed in cultural arrogance, refuse to see that the political movements they support leads to the harm of many around the world (including believers in these nations who are on the receiving end as well)--actually fueling the fires they swear they are putting out with their exceptionalism.

There are many Godly believers in the SBC, may they have wisdom.

Being a Yankee and having been in and now out of Southern Baptist Churches their (quote) name is NOT their problem. So let me consider how to put this???? Could we say their real probleem is their BUSINESS OF RELIGION?
Failure to address the Masonic Lodge Issue (they give too much money and it would be divisive)
Tolerance and outright embracing of false teachers like Rick Warren and his purpose driven (quote) Community Church movement (after all there is a lot of money in his worldly popular his 40 Days of Purpose).
Of course the list could go on and on and the SBC should serve as an example to avoid of downgrade away from the faith, the faith we can only have if by the grace of God we stay faithful to the Bible (I seem to remember something of how they came up with and sell their own translation of the Bible)
Now if God changes their name to something like???? REPENTANT BAPTIST CONVENTION that would be a wonderful thing.
Amen! Bro. Michael. Iv'e seen us go from the Conservative Resurgence, to the Carnal Recreaction mode.

An organization changing its name is usually the result of something really bad happening, like cigarette companies and military contractors changing their names to what looks like leftover scrabble letters to distance themselves from their own past. For the SBC to do the same makes it seem like they've done something they're trying to distance themselves from.
The SBC is guilty of supporting race-based slavery and abortion. Sins that cannot be corrected for those impacted. Thankfully, the SBC has repented for this iniquity.

However, as a previously small organization, they established an incredibly short-sighted name as did Campus Crusade for Christ, the Presbyterian Church in America and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Now that the SBC is expanding globally, they need a name make-over.

Hint: If you start a new denomination, consider the Great Commission and going into the whole world not just your region, country or continent.

Southern Baptist Convention.

Keep "Baptist." Lose irrelevant "Southern" and "Convention."

Think logically...

Result?

Orthodox Baptist Church.

Voilà.
