Palin surprises local Wal-Mart shoppers with visit
GALLIPOLIS — Gallipolis Wal-Mart shoppers were at first surprised and then excited on Sunday to find a national political figure in their midst who was, just as they were, picking up a few things she needed.

Accompanied by her youngest son Trig, security, staffers and a small pool of news media, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin stepped off the “Straight Talk Express” bus to enter the store around 1:30 p.m., where she purchased a bag of Parents’ Choice brand disposable diapers and a toy.

But it was also an opportunity for the first-term Alaska governor to meet the public at large and win some votes for the ticket on which she’s running with the GOP White House nominee, U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Palin did not have time to answer questions from the media following her trip through southeastern Ohio, but left some folks exhilirated at meeting her. ...

Our local Wal-Mart is in a "better" location in town than you might expect. Tucson is generally "lower-rent" than the Phoenix area, not having the same economic vitality. Or to put it another way, Tucson is Democratic, Phoenix Republican.

There's a newer Target much closer to our home; cleaner, but still has clientele with questionable sartorial taste. For example, I saw a young lady there with a tee-shirt inscribed, "Kama-Sutra Instructor," accompanied w/ a roadsign-style graphic of a copulating couple. Imagine explaining that to a 10-yr old (luckily I didn't have to).

ROFL! That is hilarious. What kind of an area is your Walmart in, Neil? I am laughing so hard I can hardly type this! If the Walmart is that bad, what must the really cheap-o stores (Dollar Store, K-Mart) be like?

There are probably 8 Walmarts within a 20 mile radius of me and all of them are always nice, clean & well maintained. I shop at Walmart all the time but if I found one like Neil describes I'd probably not go there much either.

Thanks for the laugh. The visual in my mind of what you describe is really funny.

I thought Wal-Mart was called ASDA in the UK.

We shop Wal-Mart when we have to, but we think the one near us needs some steam-cleaning in the foyer. A dress code would be nice too (e.g., no exposed underwear or tee-shirts with vulgar slogans), but that would probably put them out of business.

The article is talking about Walmart in the USA and when I shop at Walmart in the USA I only pay cash so they have no record that I was there.

It looks like "Wal-Mart" is the proper spelling but I like to spell it Walmart because that is easier for me.

And since when did Walmart start trading in the UK under the Walmart name?

Is it a surprise to folks to see that the politicians are humans who do ordinary things like buying the groceries?

Interesting name "Trig"?
