The idea for a book about porn culture came to Kevin Scott the day his daughter decided she absolutely had to have a Bratz-doll pony. For months, the 5-year-old had begged him for a Bratz doll—clad in spike heels, fishnets and miniskirt, enormous puppy-dog eyes protruding from her oversized head. Her sexy look seemed a little too sexy for a preschooler, so he and his wife bought her a different doll, which she was happy with. Except that a few months later, Bratz came out with Bratz Babyz. "If Bratz had looked like Barbie hookers, these looked like baby hookers," Scott says. Again, he convinced his daughter that My Little Pony was just as cool—and for a moment, the conversation ended. Until, of course, the Bratz came out with Bratz Ponyz. And then, says Scott, an English professor at a small college in Georgia, "I realized porn culture and I were in a death match for my daughter's soul."...
So often out of one side of their mouth the media will decry the pervasiveness of sex in our society and how it negatively impacts the youth. But then out of the other side of their mouth they promote the very same wickedness to adults.
This double-standard is evidenced by terms like adult television, adult content, adult themes, high-fashion, etc. The point being that at some mysterious age the sin of watching licentiousness or dressing a certain way will be culturally sanctioned and celebrated.
This is yet another lie of the devil. The lie being that age allows us to watch what we want or dress as we want and it is not sin. And tragically so many Christians live under this lie and promote it by watching the dregs of Hollywood on TV/in movies and then cry foul when these things are promoted to children. This is hypocrisy and children know it.
It is high time we awake out of our slumber and say unto our children, not do as I say, but do as I do. That is, be ye followers of us as we are of Christ. Culture will always be perverse as Neil noted where we in our day face no new challenge but rather the age-old one which God's children have always faced. That is, do we live as the world, or do we come out from amongst them and be separate from their evil?
Was it any better in the 1st Cent.? Image what Paul saw while at Athens, Corinth, & Rome - those white-marble statues (incl. nude gods/goddesses) in archaeological museums were originally *painted* in realistic colors. Scholium wrote: 2Cor 4:4 In whom the god of this world HATH BLINDED the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
BUT ... there is a cottage industry of "it's so bad you have to buy this!" products. Everyone and his brother has written a book about how bad porn is. Like the old saying: don't think about a pink elephant! Don't think about porn! Buy a book and don't obsess with porn. Listen to the radio programs about how bad it is. Go to the web site about how bad porn is. They're trying to cash in. After all, it's EVERY man's battle, so EVERY man has to buy their product. This fuels an obsession with porn that can be fixed by ... yes, buying more products.
