The “prosperity gospel,” as critics call it, is growing highly prominent megachurches and has blacks divided on the controversial message.
While the nation's largest African American religious organization – the 7.5 million-member National Baptist Convention – has clearly denounced the prosperity gospel especially with many black communities suffering in poverty, tens of thousands of black Christians flock to services every week to hear the message of wealth and abundance.
"God gives us power to get wealth. Does that sound like he wants you to be on welfare? That's in the Bible!" the Rev. Frederick K.C. Price, pastor of Crenshaw Christian Center in Los Angeles, told Religion & Ethics Newsweekly. Current membership at Crenshaw is reported to be over 18,000....
Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron were recently on Open Line. People like Ray who have an open door in the Pentecostal community are making a big difference in opening people's eye's to the false pretenses of the Prosperity Gospel. Meanwhile as long as Prosperity churches are one of few churches developing a multi-ethnic community of believers, I am afraid that this will not fade out as quickly as we would like. This is a form of liberation theology which totally distorts the Gospel message. Generally the Prosperity teachers add this to the Gospel message, rather than replacing it all together with the social economic theory of Liberation theology.
2 Timothy 2;15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 1 Timothy Chapter 4;1 1 Timothy ch pt 4;16 1 TI ch pt 6;6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
2 Timothy ch pt 4;3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
To bad those under such a terrible spell know nothing of these comments. Mercy Lord.
1 Corinthians 4:7-14 For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you. For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace; And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
Yes, we hear much about prosperity. How about sanctification by faith? It's almost a foreign idea these days, yet....Acts 26:18, 1 Thess. 4, 1 Thess 5:23...etc., just to name a few. A lot are after physical and temporal blessings instead of eternal and spiritual blessings in their life.
To all commentors.......yes, I agree with you all. The question is..."where do we go from here?". Can this false gospel be stopped? Is it going to take over completely the local body? What's the answer? The local church should be about restoring hurting people and directing them to Christ. But how can you do that if they are being taught is "God wants you rich", when the truth is Christ wants a personal relationship with you to change you mind, body and spirit. He wants to teach you how to fish - not to stand on the corner and beg for fish!
"The false prosperity gospel had infected the whole church."
Amen to your Posts!!
Jesus Christ promised that God would provide our needs—not our "greeds". In this capitalistic nation, many "Christians"--like the world--can never have enough. "Bigger and better" is their purpose of life on earth and they their prosperity is a gift from God—while the mortgage their souls to attain things that will be in the garbage heap tomorrow. It is called "covetousness"--which Scripture calls idolatry.
Mr. Price is correct in quoting the Bible that God is the one who "giveth thee power to get wealth."(Deut. 8:18) God will see his children through trials and bless them and bring them out safely. Does this mean having multiple houses and airplanes and 1,000-dollar suits? Not necessarily.
The "prosperity gospel" is just a modern day form of "rape", hiding under the guise of "christian doctrine". If there was ever a lie being perpetuated in the black church and in the black community it's the "health, wealth and prosperity gospel". People who attend these churches, specifically African American people need to ask the question..."how is it that the pulpit keeps getting richer, while the pew is getting poorer"? People, when is the light going to come on -- look at Jesus' example..."was he materially rich?"...NO, but he was very rich in spirit. That's where our wealth should be, "spiritual wealth". No proverty can exist there!
We as GOD'S people must endeavor to set our Hearts ON THIS ONE TRUTH -- GOD CREATED us EQUAL -- We Are Family *IN* Christ ***AS GOD'S CHILDREN*** !!!
It's not a Black man/White man issue !!! -- It's a FAMILY ISSUE !!!
That being said --- what I feel about The Family of Believers Debating All of These Prosperity Gospel Messages/Messengers is this --
-- It's good that this issue is receiving some attention it deserves !!!
GOD IS A REWARDER OF those who DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM !!!
LET us DILAGENTLY SEEK HIM -- WITH our Hearts SET UPON ***THE FIRM FOUNDATION*** OF HIS PRINCIPLED TRUTH !!! -- AND BEING ***SOLD OUT TO HIS KINGDOM RULE*** we WILL FIND COMFORT IN WHATEVER STATE we FIND ourselves !!!
"Prosperity" messengers have an *ulterior motive*/*hidden agenda* and Itching ears just love to hear how their going to be rich.
If you watch the way some work the crowd into a frenzied emotional delirium - creating a *Burning Desire* for $$$ and things -- nothing more than a Hellish doctrinal *ERROR* that men have found to be a *surefire tool* to fill their COFFERS !!! --- This bEnT creates an atmosphere of Heightened Fellings for riches and the things of this world and will set *MANY* Hearts *astray* !!!
Encouraging to read this, since the prosperity gospel preys upon the poor. I am encouraged that black leaders are speaking up against it. I hope more follow suit -- and maybe leaders of other colors, too! The P.G. is designed to prey upon the poor's hopes for a better life with a get-rich-quick, lottery mentality that is the opposite of Christianity. I still have nauseating memories of Leroy Thompson telling a huge gathering to pull a slot machine lever and say "money cometh to me now!" over and over. Sick!
