When we walk with the Lord, In the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey.
Refrain: Trust and obey! For there's no other way To be happy in Jesus, But to trust and obey.
Not a shadow can rise, Not a cloud in the skies, But His smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt nor a fear, Not a sigh nor a tear, Can abide while we trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear, Not a sorrow we share, But our toil He doth richly repay; Not a grief nor a loss, Not a frown nor a cross, But is blest if we trust and obey.
But we never can prove The delights of His love Until all on the altar we lay; For the favor He shows, And the joy He bestows, Are for those who will trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet We will sit at His feet, Or we'll walk by His side in the way; What He says we will do, Where He sends we will go— Never fear, only trust and obey!

HYMN HISTORY:
The music for this song was composed by D.B. Towner, the first director of music at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. The inspiration for the hymn's writing came in 1886 during an occasion when Towner was leading singing for D.L. Moody in Brockton, Massachusetts. In a testimony service which took place, he heard a young man say, 'I am not quite sure - but I am gong to trust, and I am going to obey.'
Towner jotted down the words and sent them to his friend J.H. Sammis, a Presbyterian minister, who developed the idea into a full hymn. the refrain came first - it is a capsule version of the entire song.
Trust and obey, For there's no other way To be happy in Jesus, But to trust and obey.
The song emphasises the two aspects of being a Christian - faith and good words. And it places them in proper order! We come to Christ without any plea 'but that He had shed His blood' for us.
But after we trust in Christ, our faith must be translated into action. Because God loves us and we love Him, we seek to obey Him, and do His will in every realm of our lives. As James asks, 'What use is it for a man to say he has faith when he does nothing to show it?'
When we walk with the Lord In the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way, While we do His good will He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey.
BIBLE PASSAGE:
11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
