I wonder how many other businesses are doing the same thing? I ask that because often, churches are run like businesses, and frequently, church leaders--call them elders, deacons, overseers, etc---are the very same persons who run local businesses. So for them to take out loans to pay for remodeling jobs, new chairs, new sound/video systems, etc--is not a problem, it's the same thing they would do at their Mon-Fri businesses. Maybe Christian financial guru Dave Ramsey needs to do a series on how churches need to stay out of debt! And speaking of debt, as we head into November, we receive more and more appeals for donations from many charitable groups. It would be nice to see each one give us a financial statement with their request, saying we need x dollars to fill this need, we have x dollars in reserve funds, and last year we spent x dollars on debt, x dollars on interest, etc. |

And now for something completely different? Well, maybe not. Someone said that the Federal Govt is so large, it is like a cruise ship, so turning it to go another direction is very hard. It is interesting to see the "spin doctors" at work in explaining away the Democrats losses. In Maryland, yes, a new Republican Governor, but still Democrats control the legislature; they were not thrown out of office. There are too many Federal employees and retirees in the state to allow them to give even a passing thought to voting for Republicans, who--as imagined but not yet proven--will cut their precious salaries, pensions, etc. Same thing in Virginia. |

Share your faith--is that like share your sandwich? If it were a sandwich, would you cut it exactly halfways, or just give away the bread? How does it work with faith? Do you give away a part of your faith? If you do, does that mean you have less faith than before? And if it is online, how you do know who receives it, and whether they are just 'playing along' or 'humoring you' to achieve some ulterior purpose? In the religion of Islam, there is a principle called 'taqqiyya' that means any Muslim can deceive, lie, pretend, etc to anyone else (yes, even other Muslims) if they think it is for the purpose of advancing Islam. So any Muslim might say, "OH, I dreamed about Jesus last night," or "I really like your Christian faith--how do I become a Christian?" while still remaining a Muslim. "Share your faith" is religious jargon that many use without thinking of what it means to someone who does not have the same faith. Paul's letter to Timothy about praying for all men, but especially governing leaders, that we may all lead quiet lives, that this is good in the sight of God, who desires all men be saved, makes me think that creating conditions that enable all men to live quiet lives is what we are to be about, and God will take care of the rest. |
