I am glad SA has included this story in the News items because it allows me to 'share' with you how sad I feel when I see people lined up to buy these tickets.
I feel like handing out tracts to them, esp. a tract that would highlight chance and God's control of all things.
Remember Jonah on that ship?
The sailors threw lots to see who was responsible for the storm, and the lots pointed to Jonah. Was that God making the lots work out that way?
Even after Judas hanged himself, lots were thrown to choose the successor apostle. Was that God making the lots work out that way?
Not that I am saying churches should be out there buying lottery tickets.

This reminds me of the reason why many churches have Vacation Bible Schools open to the public during summer break of the govt schools---to get the gospel into the kids so the parents will get it through osmosis.
Yes, it's terrible they are lying, but then the question becomes--is there enough evidence that would convict you of being a Christian (besides getting up early Sunday mornings, dressing in your "Sunday best" and going out the door with Bibles in your family's hands).

A similar news item is about the Jews persecuted in Spain by the Catholic Inquisition; there is a law (stalled in the Spanish legislative process) that would give the descendants of these Jews citizenship in Spain (as if that was something worth having, after they persecuted your ancestors, and their economy is in no great shakes).
Many of those Jews 'converted' to Catholicism when in secret they maintained their Jewish customs.
Also, keep in mind that a good third of Jews in the US do not believe in God. So are they lying about being Jews? Many of them do not believe in the traditional Old Testament stories of David and Goliath, Abraham sacrificing his son Isaac (though Muslims say it was Ishmael).

Could it be that NBC found hundreds of people giving the right message (you select that one, according to your own theological perspective, of which there are many at S.A.), but cut them out and only aired the non-Christian ones? I do think that is what happened.
So change the channel to the PBS network and what do you find? A program about 'religious journeys' that makes equal all religions, including one from Africa that many Cubans practice, but is not practiced widely in Africa (just like the phony baloney holiday of Kwanzaa).
I would not expect any TV networks to represent my faith. People who think they should stick to their black and white TV sets, too.

They may gather to sing carols but will they go to church? I doubt it. The churches in Europe are empty, relics of the past, museum pieces, tourist attractions. A music program on Christian TV in the USA features an organist playing the organs in beautiful old European churches; if you look closely, you will see a missing piece--no audience!
This also reminds me of people who think that saying "Merry Christmas" or decorating their homes or offices with lights and Christmas trees is somehow a great testimony of their faith. They don't understand that in Japan, it is very popular to decorate with lights and they are not Christians.
It's also like the other response to a familiar "how are you" greeting, "better than I deserve." Theologically correct but who is going to stop to ask for the whole explanation?

Aha! I knew there was a reason why all those young people were using their smartphones while the sermon was being preached.

And, my oh my, there are so many young people going to church these days with their phones, it is getting hard to get into a pew without feeling crowded!

Thanks YouVersion for helping get young people back into our churches!

Even better: with 7 out of 10 of the world's inhabitants able to read the Bible in their own language on their smartphones, this might even make the Wycliffe Bible Translators obsolete!
All we need to do is hire the best translators at the United Nations to translate versions for the other 3 of 10 people.
And we won't need to send missionaries, just smartphones with the YouVersion installed!

Let me imagine what that church would look like: sermons that never tell them it's wrong to move in with their girlfriend/boyfriend, or get drunk on the weekends. Also the service would begin around 3pm in the afternoon and last less than an hour so they could go bar-hopping afterwards.
That church's website would be sponsored by all the restaurants and bars they like to hang out at. It would be really HIP and have videos to watch.

I wonder how many other businesses are doing the same thing? I ask that because often, churches are run like businesses, and frequently, church leaders--call them elders, deacons, overseers, etc---are the very same persons who run local businesses.

So for them to take out loans to pay for remodeling jobs, new chairs, new sound/video systems, etc--is not a problem, it's the same thing they would do at their Mon-Fri businesses.
Maybe Christian financial guru Dave Ramsey needs to do a series on how churches need to stay out of debt!
And speaking of debt, as we head into November,
we receive more and more appeals for donations from many charitable groups.
It would be nice to see each one give us a financial statement with their request, saying we need x dollars to fill this need, we have x dollars in reserve funds, and last year we spent x dollars on debt, x dollars on interest, etc.

And now for something completely different?
Well, maybe not. Someone said that the Federal Govt is so large, it is like a cruise ship, so turning it to go another direction is very hard. It is interesting to see the "spin doctors" at work in explaining away the Democrats losses. In Maryland, yes, a new Republican Governor, but still Democrats control the legislature; they were not thrown out of office. There are too many Federal employees and retirees in the state to allow them to give even a passing thought to voting for Republicans, who--as imagined but not yet proven--will cut their precious salaries, pensions, etc. Same thing in Virginia.

Share your faith--is that like share your sandwich? If it were a sandwich, would you cut it exactly halfways, or just give away the bread? How does it work with faith? Do you give away a part of your faith? If you do, does that mean you have less faith than before?
And if it is online, how you do know who receives it, and whether they are just 'playing along' or 'humoring you' to achieve some ulterior purpose?
In the religion of Islam, there is a principle called 'taqqiyya' that means any Muslim can deceive, lie, pretend, etc to anyone else (yes, even other Muslims) if they think it is for the purpose of advancing Islam. So any Muslim might say, "OH, I dreamed about Jesus last night," or "I really like your Christian faith--how do I become a Christian?" while still remaining a Muslim.
"Share your faith" is religious jargon that many use without thinking of what it means to someone who does not have the same faith.
Paul's letter to Timothy about praying for all men, but especially governing leaders, that we may all lead quiet lives, that this is good in the sight of God, who desires all men be saved, makes me think that creating conditions that enable all men to live quiet lives is what we are to be about, and God will take care of the rest.
