Potters, you are right on! I feel bad that many writing these posts, opinions, etc. are not doing their homework. When the N T speaks of Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual songs, again, I say that this verse is speaking of the 150 Psalms. The 150 Psalms were broken up into Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs. I've studied this subject deeply, in the original, etc. Also, when Jesus took His disciples apart, it says in 1 of the Gospels "they sang a hymn" the word hymn, in the original meant, PSALM. They sang a Psalm. I find no problem at all following the Bible in this matter. Again, when you hear the music that is being sung in many churches, [churches that at one time were faithful and sang Psalms], is it any wonder that many churches are going speedily downhill with their preaching, no more Psalm singing, etc. Re: singing other songs that are from the Bible, I believe we surely can sing them. In our church we sing " The song of Mary, " The song of Zachariah, The Song of Simeon, etc. They are in the Bible nd not manmade which we reall y have to be so careful of. Just because a band gets up front and starts shoutin', etc. does not always mean this is from God. Our own emotions can do alot! Being a music teacher, I know how music can go. I think our singing should be sung with reverence!!!!

Re: homosexuallity.....we must be careful not to single out this particular sin as if it was worse than all others. I believe there are men and women who struggle with this sin and some wish it would " go away". People must fight these temptations with God's help because homosexuallity is a terrible sin. We cannot condone this sin anymore than people who struggle with alcohol addiction, drug addiction, etc. etc,. If we're born from a chemically addicted family, is it okay to say, "go right ahead and drink and use drugs, you can't help these tendencies. Your parents were that way, so, no problem. Sin is Sin in God's sight whether we think it's alright or not. Our opinion is not what counts. Christians have a High Priest in Heaven who can help us in our temptations becuase Jesus, Himself was tempted "in all things", yet without sin. Therefore there is no excuse whatsoever for living a homosexual lifestyle, since there is a way of escape from this horrific sin!

Coora,
You bring up a good point. I understand fully what you are saying. The Psalters had to be kinda rewritten to rhyme with the music, of course. At least when you stay with the Psalms you have a good guideline. When we go to hymns, praise and worship, contemporary Christian, Christian rock, many times the songs are not at all fully Biblical. Don't get me wrong, I know of many faithful churches here in New Jersey that sing both Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual songs and Praise and Worship! The faithful preaching of God's word is still most important! Thanks !!!!!!!!

Disciple,
You are right. The Bible says that "judgement will begin at the house of God". Imagine having a name like UCC, and then completely, obviously going against God's word. It is mind boggling to me!! The Bible is crystal clear that same sex marriage/gay lifestyle is terribly sinful in God's sight. Just read Romans 1 as a starter, nevermind all the other texts against this sin. You know I don't mean you, brother!!!! I wish that there were more that spoke out like you do!!

I think VBS is great, provided Children are being taught exactly the way God's word says they should be taught. Teachers, etc. should be Godly people in every sense of the word. I do think that VBS should involve much more unchurched children, however. I've seen it in my own church for many years that most of the children were from our own church. I think every child going to VBS should bring 1 "unchurched" child with them. VBS can be a better opportunity to have them hear about Jesus, etc, than a regular church service!. Just my oppinion!

Thanks, everyone, for your individual "opinions" re: "Psalm singing only" in praise. I do, however, hold on to my original viewpoint because of what I believe the Bible is rather clear on. I'm a music teacher, organist/pianist, [all by God's grace], lest I should boast. I've studied many of the great hymns of the church. They are beautiful!!! So many are Scriptual and many are not! As I said earlier, The Psalms exalt our Lord, they are prayers for us,etc. Why would we want to use anything else?? God's word is more than sufficient in every way, especially when it comes to music. We use the Psalter in our church. These rhyming Psalms have been put to many of the hymn tunes. I feel that many who don't know these Psalters/Psalms don't know what they're missing. Melodically they are georgous. Above all, we are singing God's own word. When I hear the music in many churches today, I say, what happened. Why does the "music style" of the world have to enter our churches. We, the Church should be different in many ways. We should be teaching the world what and how and why we should sing the Psalms. Re; Hymn use, I think they are great for private use, musical programs, during the week, etc. I will comment on "Christian Rock", etc., at another time. This subject of C.R. is truly tragic!

anyone who agrees with gay marriage does not know [or want to know] what the Bible has to say about it. There are a few gray areas in the Bible, however the gay lifestyle is terribly sinful and against God. Just read Romans 1 for starters, and check out so many other verses that go against this sin. What about "common sense-anatomy" ?????

I, personally believe Psalms should be sung in the churches. Having studied " Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual sonds...all referring to the 150 Psalms, you know how the Psalms are broken up. Why not stay with the Bible and sing the Psalms. Everything a Christian needs, etc. is in the Psalms...sorry, I must go by my Bible!
