I read of King Asa this morning, 3 chapters worth. I was a long time in 2 Chronicles 14 when I was reminded of a prayer prayed in 1988 from that chapter.

Anyway, I found interesting what was stated in 2Ch 15:17 “But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days.” Because..In just these three chapters there is three different instances of a prophet going to the king. He responded positively in two out of three cases 'But' in 2Ch 16:7-10 And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, Because thou hast relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thine hand. Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with very many chariots and horsemen? yet, because thou didst rely on the LORD, he delivered them into thine hand. For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars. Then Asa was wroth with the seer, and put him in a prison house; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people..

It would be interesting to know the time frame of the author, of that which you've quoted here. I appreciated it and checked the link.

I looked up sectaries and would be interested to know what you think the author is referring to here.

My historical reference is related to Cromwell's troops in Scotland when William Guthrie preached boldly in their presence for there were those, acting in a national capacity, from England in responce to a few who were acting in a national capacity as well and all contrary to the Solemn League and Covenant. Mr Guthrie pointed out in the sermon that the sectaries were holding the whole nation of Scotland accountable for what a few in the military did contrary to the majority that were aiming at faithfulness to their vows. In the sermon he boldly stated the occupying army was aware of this yet continued in the occupation and war like tactics upon innocent people, God's people.

@pennned,

Doesn't his/her link ring a bell with you? You may want to qualify wherein you agree; if you recall this contributor's sermons are no longer on sa and were discussed here before.

@Mcorneli your suggested reading is not necessary since the Scripture gives adequate information necessary regarding the topic - the problems men and women face in how they related to one another. Sin is the underlying problem and Jesus Christ's obedience to the Father (Luke 22:42) in covering the sins of His people, His perfect righteousness, according to what is written he imputes to His people together with their progressive sanctification when they by the Spirit mortify the deeds of the flesh goes a long way to the solution in this life. All there is room for in a post it note. I admit the increase in want of restraint, in our society in general, compounds things and complicates. Deception's tangled web I'm afraid.

Grace - the free unmerited favor of God that draws those loved by God; whether an individual, or family/nation to Christ incorporating them in the Beloved, so they will return the same love to God. Salt is a preservative of flesh and until we are glorified, we still must battle with it and in it. Salt ought not loss it's savor, nor grace it's memory of sins forgiven.

Rev 7:9-12 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God (Ps.4:8) which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts (utterance to the ministry), and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Sadly, the word 'Christian', like so many other words in our time, has been abused; but what saith the Scripture:

Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them...to end of chapter

1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

2Jn 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

Psalm 15
A Psalm of David.

LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be m

Didn't get very far listening because when the words were left for a picture the Scripture I quoted on another thread came to mind.

2 Chron 7:20b-21..And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it; so that he shall say, *Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and unto this house?* And it shall be answered, Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them.

Debating worthy things with what was pictured is syncretism.

Don't know why B McC knew what Chris didn't state?

sc, I don't understand why you can without a Scriptural command disregard the 4th Commandment. It became a great joy for me after conversion to assemble each Lord's day and prepare my heart and home for the day set aside for the worship of God, by God. You cannot deny the binding obligation of any other commandment, why the 4th? There was a man in my church who came under conviction regarding the 6 days of labor mentioned in the command. He confessed he had not labored at his employ as unto the Lord. You see the command does not negate our duty the other six days to God neither justify our forgetfulness of what belongs to God one whole day of 7. All are to glorify God in respective duties commanded.

We cannot keep any of the commands perfectly, Jesus did, his righteouness is imputed to us. Without holiness no man will not see the Lord. To have one day in 7 to enjoy our rest in Christ having the ability to think on him without distraction, is a delight, if we're walking in the Spirit. Heb.12:14 Read Hebrews 4 from the Geneva Bible Notes and Matthew Henry, Resting from our own works is resting from the works of the flesh. It is in that way Christ grants us rest – eternally. He who is the fulfillment of the law, imputes his perfect keeping of it to us wherein we res

Impossible. Psalm 9:15-20

Atheism is not only the attempt of fallen man; For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers..Ephes 6:12-13 to discredit God and usurp His authority as Creator/Redeemer. There is also ignorance, idolatry, and profanity. A word study of profane would be helpful, it can mean to break (as break ones word) or defile (Heb.chalal used in Lev.) One can profane the Lord's Day. And yes, sc we can rejoice and be thankful every day but can you set aside every day over which Jesus is Lord in thought, word and deed, in such a public way, since we are commanded to labor six days? Yesterday, I listened to a lecture here from the WCF LC Q.&A.16 on the Creation of Angels. I found it most helpful for a number of reasons.

The debate here troubled me due to the variety of opinions, as various as the individual and their doctrine. The WCF, written at a time in History when the false worship and doctrine of Church of Rome was abhorred and detested for its attempted usurpation of Christ's crown. This Mother of Harlots was then exposed for her innovations and evils in worship contained in supplications, complaints and protestations. During the Reformation in Scotland both Church and State Covenanted to resist her harlotry, in the National Covenant of Scotland.

Rome's perverted the truth about angels; just one of many innovations and evils of their idolatry that was corrected in the WCF. It applied to this article for a number of reasons. This article tempts to pit idolatry against atheism and in upholding one, it becomes impossible not to err regarding truth.

The WCF corrects Romes views of the Christian Sabbath and her adding to Scripture in worship or doctrine. Not rightly observing the Lord's Day removes one of the means to prevent sins of omission and lead to sins of commission, all sin makes us defy God's revealed will ..2Thess.2:11

Thank you for your input Rnel and sharing your experience of the grace and mercy of our Great God.

Welcome.

I remember how gently and firmly the Lord dealt with my sin in my youth. My sleepless nights began after looking for a Church and finding one which taught I could loose my salvation.

As a new born babe I'd already learned if perseverance depended on me alone I was undone. It was this that I battled with. My teachers were mature persons, older folk and I was a new Christian. In my pleadings with the Lord to keep me, he brought Psalm 116 to my understanding and I have traced His faithfulness to me in Christ regarding this matter of his keeping throughout my life time.

I cannot sing it without remembering all the Divine interventions in my life from that first answered prayer; Help me Lord. Jude 24,25

Blessings in the Beloved.

No, John, the God of Scripture is Omnipotent. Force maybe necessary in a contest against equals, but you are speaking about Almighty God.

I thought of Col.1 when reading your post. Please read it. You do not speak the truth about God or what others believe about God.

Joh 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
Joh 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Joh 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
Joh 3:10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

Force implies against the will, God makes us willing in the day of His power.
You do not appear to be willing, if you see it as a contrary force.

[AUTHOR]Could you please tell me[/AUTHOR]where the Apostle Paul advocated the "first two steps in proper discipline" in I Corinthians 5? Was not the offender kicked out of the church via a letter?[/QUOTE]Not speaking for Rodney,

1 Cor.5 is addressing a long standing situation and the letter was not written to the offending party but to the ministers of the Church to be read to the Church as from the apostle. It is reported among you, Paul was not there yet the report had reached his attention. He had enough information and enough time had transpired for him to make this judgment.

The Church in Paul's day was closer to the doctrine of the apostles and prophets. This is at a time of great falling away. How does that effect the situation and all those involved? When sin is first observable to the local assembly, in its earliest troubling of the people of God, isn't that when Matthew 18 should be instituted in order to prevent full blown scandal? It has been my observation that religious pluralism has destroyed church discipline, one can just leave and take his/her sin elsewhere lack of communication between Churches division, schism and gossip complicate. Accountability begins at the top, the OT prophets rebuked accordingly as did the letters in Rev.2&3

@ Ladybug,
Thank you for the clue. Consider 1Co 10:1-14 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

In Joshua 24 these are they that entered the promised land they too are a useful ensample for us. 2 Tim 3:16,

I wanted to say so much about what the Lord taught me in Joshua 24 but there is no room and if I had it I'm not sure I could do him justice with my words.

I will pray for you as the head of your household so much rides on your right understanding, so as to lead the dear ones under your charge.

You've been on my mind most of the day. May the Lord teach you what you need to know. To Quote a dear friend's aunt. "We suffer all our lives for not knowing what we needed to know when we needed to know it."

@John4J, Joshua as a type of Christ also said: "Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins. If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good."

The covenant of works brought Adam and sons into a state of sin and misery, not only are we unable but unwilling to help ourselves in God's way of faith. Cain's posterity offered to God something less then what he requires-faith in Christ. It is Christ's propitiation of man's just and due wrath and His and imputed righteousness (whether Christ to come in the OT or has come in the NT) Christ alone is sufficient to meet the demands of a holy God. The effectual call of God convinces us that our misery in this life is due to our own sins, the Holy Spirit quickens us as individuals to hear our Prophet when he says 'you' are the man whatever the sin, we each of us, have between God and ourselves. God must convince by His Word preached and Spirit that Christ is the only mediator as the God/man in whom we can approach so holy a God. It is written; the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. God is a consuming fire outside of Christ' righteousness, ours will never be eno

My second thought is how strange it is that this type of thing is actually news and news that causes us to “rightfully” praise a particular church.
A reforming Church understands that in the visible Church there are regenerate, unregenerate and reprobates treated as the privileged community. Their lives are watched over by the elders, deacons, all the saints and parents (a mercy with great hope); elders understand the saints come in by means of the same door required of them John 10:2,7,9. If a member sins there are ways to establish the charge as true and grant a time for true repentance and faith if it were not present previously proving by prayer, personal admonitions and instruction from the Scripture that it is true that God hates this practise, whatever sin it is. Family business is kept in the family and it does not go outside for public opinion. When this kind of oversight breaks down, sin will have free course.

There are sins so grievous and situations so complex that they cannot be addressed at the local level and then Churches of like-mind would be involved. No one is given over to the greater excommunication as a first step.
