This is not a news article, it's a press release for a new book! Don't waste your time clicking the link.

Why weren't people "ballistic" in 2006 when this story broke, then?

When people embrace walled gardens and allow corporations to tell them what software they can and can't run on their computing devices, this is exactly what happens. This is the consequence of giving up general-purpose computing and embracing locked-down platforms. If you don't like it, don't support walled gardens and locked-down computing.

Why can't anyone link to the original source!?! Why are the links always to articles that don't link to the original?

Here is the original article with no journalistic interpretations or filler quotes:

http://www.zenit.org/en/articles/explanatory-note-on-the-meaning-of-salvation-in-francis-daily-homily-of-may-22

This is a detailed, thoughtful response that's worth reading, unlike the article above.

When there's no news, the media just makes up stories. This one follows the classic template of speculating that something happened, getting outside sources to comment that it could have happened, getting the people involved to deny that it happened, and running it as a story.

This study was paid for by a company which sells a parental control software program, so I don't know how much stock I would put in it. They have a financial interest in making the world a scary place.

The idea that people will stop using permanent paper books and switch to temporarily rented e-books seems to be more a figment of the media's imagination than anything else. The past few years have had a lot of hype, but sales numbers don't back it up.

On October 20, 2011 the Family Radio web site had a message which included: "Sadly, as we have earnestly studied the Bible over these five months we have found verse after verse that supports and strengthens the
conclusion that the Lord is no longer saving sinners. He has finished
that glorious work."

They have never retracted or explained this statement, and it just disappeared from their web site. I saved the entire page if anyone wants it. No one ever held them accountable for this statement.

I'm trying to decide if you'd be better off giving your money to the scammers or to Benny Hinn. A tough call!

The media commonly refers to someone by their former position without telling you their current position.

This guy's current position is advising the entertainment industry. He is a featherweight. I would not take what he says very seriously at all.

When civil disobedience reaches a certain level, the laws need to be reconsidered. The government has already deputized businesses and employers to confiscate taxes and not give people any option. People are rebelling against use taxes, since there is no practicable way to track them (except in special circumstances). I think it's a sign that taxation has gone too far, and people see taxes as going beyond what is necessary to maintain a civil society.

I'm always surprised by these appeals for money, because Word of Faith teaches to give away money to get money. Seed time and harvest time. To get money, in their beliefs, you give money away. If you don't have enough money to meet your need, then you have seed you should give away. So why is it that preachers who teach Word of Faith doctrine want people to give them money? (Creflo Dollar did something similar in 2004.) They should be consistent with their own beliefs and give away what they have and let God give them the money they need.

The worst thing anyone could do is pay attention to Dawkins, since that's all he wants. He'll say anything to get attention. Best just to ignore him.

Update: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/04/senate-passes-online-sales-tax-by-74-20-vote/

The real issue isn't the sales tax so much as how difficult it is to calculate the sales tax for anyone but a huge company. Companies want the government to create some degree of sanity to make calculating tax easier.

For example, where I live there is 1 day per year with a tax holiday for "back to school" sales. If I buy a Dover math book that day, I pay full sales tax, but if someone buys a computer to play games, they don't pay tax. Imagine how hard it would be to calculate sales tax!

Not a good idea. These prosperity preachers thrive on attention and controversy, and know how to turn any sort of criticism into persecution. Best to ignore them, and they'll wither away.

My conclusion based on my study of social media for the past couple of years is: Anyone who has anything better to do is doing it, and everyone else is using social media.

How far do you take this boycott? If you sell your shares, you will get US dollars, and then you will own a stake in the US government, which engages in activities you probably object to. Anywhere you put your money will have some sort of similar objection.

(Remember, if you do boycott, Starbucks is in the S&P 500, so you'll also have to divest any index funds that mirror it.)
