John 3:5 'Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

God brings an individual to new birth, then faith and repentance?
Romans 3:24,25 "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;"

John 16:7,8 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:"

First, I acknowledge that you were not speaking to me but CV, I know comparatively little of what CV is for but rather more what he stands against. So my response, in question form to your statement that troubled me, is two fold:

1. What about John the Baptist converted in the womb or Timothy; 2 Tim. 3:15 "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." Timothy all his days had the testimony of his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois together with Paul's watchful over site, later in life. Could Timothy give a day and time?
2. Ephesians 2:11-18 (no room, I tried for your convenience)

Some time back I came across Augustine's interpretation of the parable of the Good Samaritan
Augustine of Hippo?

I care not for any of the allegorists Bunyan included.
If so regarding this parable and I was not familiar with it; I will say that I never said he was infallible, but as regards the doctrinal error of the times in which he was contenting for the truth he was used of God for the good of the Church pre-Luther's reform who also was not without error. Only God is free of all error. These men were not perfect but true, not sinless but faithful, May the Lord make that true of all his people in this perverse and crooked generation.

Scotland bound herself, to uphold Christ's Divine prerogative as Creator against the wicked devises of Papal Rome. The Civil Magistrate swore to uphold both tables of the Moral Law and enforce them under the gospel using to sword to punish 'persistent' unrepentant violators high handed rebellion, who were given the privilege and responsibility to sit under the preaching of the true gospel. The people of Scotland together with England and Ireland re-swore the National Covenant of Scotland and the SLC, leaning on the strength of Jesus Christ they did covenant to be of his household in Church and support Church members in State when called to it. 2 Sam 16:18 They vowed not only for themselves, but all their posterity in the 'reformed' churches (not a building made with hands) until Christ's return. Ignorance of this truth does not constitute an excuse for the 1.Ministry 2.Congregation 3.Magistrate or 4.Individual believer in order of culpability.

3. Those taught by the unction of the Holy Spirit by whatever means he chooses (listed previously) should be able to pray for and help their erring brethren who are office bearers, without usurping their authority if their authority is in reality from God.

An interesting thing is how some of the 'Reformers' (who adopted Calvinsim and with him favored the teachings of Augustine a Doctor in the RCC)...
As were Calvin and Luther before God delivered them out of Roman's errors. The difference being in Augustine's time, that that man of sin, the pope of Rome had not been clearly identified as he was by Luther, Knox, Calvin and others who out of the encroaching darkness restored the light of Justification by faith alone. Augustine fought against Pelagian's error. You falsely charge these men because of your bias. A true Christian who acknowledges the Lordship of Christ as Creator/Redeemer sees his right to reign, on earth, as in heaven, for which Christ taught us to pray. These institutions are separate, but those in any nation who say they are Christian need a true and sworn allegiance to Jesus Christ and no other who would denies him in word or practice.

Baptismal regeneration is an heresy of Rome who does not believe in the doctrine of original sin. Laving or sprinkling is the testimony of Scripture as to mode and the subjects are not one thing for the Jewish believer and another for the Gentile.
Dissenters is a rather loose term and needs to be qualified.

But to my mind, the worst of it was, that they had no respect whatever for those of different opinion...
I'm not speaking about secondary things here John. Nor can I can't speak for the others of whom you mention, having never been on board with them here on SA. But to my mind it is a sin against God to respect men more than God when any ones shuts their mind to the Truth who has made Himself known to all men in His Word. But if all men could come to a unity of mind with their Bibles alone, what need have we for pastors or teachers? Surely that is testified against in Scripture Ephes 4 and here very practically by men's best efforts.

If in the righteous judgment of Almighty God, he has taken away not the visible Church but the efficacy of His Word and the power of His Spirit that brings about a unity in the Truth and maturity, then is it any wonder one cannot find a like minded people, and will rather agree to disagree congenially, at the expense of Christ's purchased possession?

No King and No 'pope' is above (exempt from) obeying the Word of God...
Historically the Divine Right of Kings or Erastianism was a doctrine friendly enough with the Church of Rome when it served its purposes. Erastianism was upheld by Prelacy or Bishops employed by the king, that where useful to uphold the kings tyrannical power over all his dissenting Protestant subjects. The Covenanters who recognized Jesus Christ as Creator God of all men and Redeemer of his people were bold in their biblically righteous banner proclamation, when they were set faced to uphold Christ's Crown and Covenant against all his enemies. Many did even unto their untimely deaths by a church and state confederacy executing them as traitors (that is according to the Roman Church and State opinion, but not that of God and his people) A despised few, still attempt to uphold it feebly, that is until they buckle(d) to the political franchise in what ever nation they are (were) found in. If you can't buy and sell, you become a refugee and now true faith is under fire, and that will continue to be so until the end of the 1260 years of the great falling away.

There is simply not enough space here to discuss or debate the differences between us. Besides that would take us far from the news story of this thread.
On the contrary our differences are very much related to this story. It might be helpful to me if I understand your differences with what I usually debate or discuss, that there is not enough space for. Certainly not enough space to discuss or debate them. But other then the WCF, Exclusive Psalmody, and the doctrines of grace aka TULIP I don't know what else makes us diametrically opposite. Oh yes,
Civil Government.

I would in charity assume that all professing Christians love Christ and know of the gospel that has saved them. Many are concerned for evangelism, but what of the poor divided, schismatic church who the lost will know or recognize by the love they have for one another. We disagree in things ecclesiastical and civil and both are important to sustain the health of the people of God. Who wants to join that bunch unless of course for socialization and a good Scriptural argument but not for their conformity to Christ.

Psalm 2:1-12
"Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him."

Michael, I also had errands and left after reading this, when I returned someone else had answered for me in the form of debate. It was Frank who pointed out that debate and dialog are different. A dialog says were are negotiable on this issue. On the doctrines of Grace I am not. I find you a likable fellow in your general deportment but I am at great odds with your doctrine.

We see everything through the glasses of who we believe God is and what we believe he requires of us. So, covering your offense (which is sin) in love, I reply to your question because it is not something widely taught in our day.

Believers are not to participate in a Christ rejecting Government or they themselves are rejecting Christ. Your candidate makes one statement that homosexuality is sin and you want him supported. I can't because he is under vows to deny Christ, He is upholding a Christ denying Constitution. I do not believe the government in any nation should be part of the beast of the sea opposing Christ, nor that the church which is one in any and every nation should be a harlot because not in a lawful and therefore faithful covenant relationship to Him.

Insightful Frank, I was just recalling today staying with friends with a large family. There was never a lack of things to do for the woman folk and many men were very productive in their sphere of labor coming and going from their home. This family was not hindered by their large size and small dwelling but rather they greatly profitted both the Church and Community. They had much opposition within and without, but God purpose for them and their season of usefulness is in His hands.

This world system's darkness perverts their idea of useful productivity and twists it so that they call good, evil and evil good.

Thanks for the link to Plumer, Dopey.
Context to the Scripture that Dopey quoted.
2 Thes. 2 Paul is addressing false prophets who either by letter or word caused the saints in Thessalonica to fear that the Day of the Lord had already passed. Then Paul reminds them again of his teaching, that the man of sin had not yet been revealed and that had to proceed the second coming of Christ. That after that time, (his being revealed) the deception would be strong and that many who had no real love of the truth would be given over to strong delusion. Paul in Dopey's quote is comparing what some in Jerusalem suffered at the hands of the Judaizers, to what others in Greece suffered from the hands of their own country men.

During the whole of His Story (Christ's), in times of apostasy the gospel does not flourish as it does in times of reformation or revival of the truth (not emotion, but not without it hedged by its Scriptural guidelines) These times are more settled times for the visible Church. I expect to see this in the future and to a small degree see it now by faith, after God again revives truth, and vindicates His own cause on earth for which He is very jealous.

John's thoughts brought Deut. 29:29 to mind; "The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law."

I have understood doctrine simply to mean what the Bible teaches about God and what he would have us to do about who He is. To consider who the Scripture says about man before and after faith, as it clearly tells us, to varying degrees. This passage from Deuteronomy seems to indicate there is enough in the written word for us and our posterity, to know what we are to do and prayer is part of that doing. We know if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us and the Scripture reveals His will by the power of the Holy Spirit through whatever means of grace He appoints. Whether that be private worship, reading the Scripture and prayer, corporate worship, the preaching of the Word and corporate prayer or the fellowship of the saints in their meetings together. Shouldn't know the right response to Mr. Camping, if we are thinking and doing right?

I read and considered. I believe a balanced response to this was given by a man who would pull a lot of things together for every institution, family and individual. The man's name was William S.Plumer 1865 and his book was entitled; 'Jehovah Jireh A Treatise on Providence' I believe it would balance many things for many people and humble us ALL, it did me and it has helped others. Humility is an ongoing process as is our understanding of Him who is our Way, Truth and Life.

We Calvinists have only been trying to get you off this old popish philosophy of yours about salvation by works. It is for your own good to leave these things entirely in the hands of a truly Sovereign God.
Remember that TULIP is all Gospel.
Total Depravity.
Because of the fall, man is unable of himself to savingly believe the gospel. The sinner is dead, blind, and deaf to the things of God; his heart is deceitful and desperately corrupt. His will is not free, it is in bondage to his evil nature, therefore, he will not - indeed he cannot - choose good over evil in the spiritual realm. Consequently, it takes much more than the Spirit's assistance to bring a sinner to Christ - it takes regeneration by which the Spirit makes the sinner alive and gives him a new nature. Faith is not something man contributes to salvation but is itself a part of God's gift of salvation - it is God's gift to the sinner, not the sinner's gift to God."
Well stated.

But I did find the section in the Wiki info concerning individual options entertaining.

What in the world does a "belief" in arbitrary election and perhaps even a supposed regeneration before and apart from repentance and faith have to do with a Candidate for President having the courage to dare call homosexuality sin?
Sir, I believe I already addressed your second question in a previous post see 6/10/11 12:52 PM

As for your first question your contention is with God and not with me, if you do not rightly understand the foundational teachings of His word, as concerns all the the offices of Christ; as our Prophet,Priest and King. For it is all these that are in question as regards this candidate and of the later there is a problem, no doubt!

Also it is good to consider there is a Scriptural difference between encouraging someone in the truth and flattering someone for advantage, of the later Proverbs speaks at length.

The choice that all mankind have is to fear God and tremble at His Word or rebel. Since man's fall in the garden, he has been incapable of choosing anything other than sin because the fall effected man's whole nature. Even if a man never sinned in practice, the imputation of Adam's sin was enough to damn him. Clearly the choice is God's to have mercy on whom he will and whom he wills he hardeneth.

Consider the physiological implications of the 2nd Commandment. Exodus 20:4-6 "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."
