(Thomas Chalmers)

There are two ways in which a person may attempt to displace the love of the world from the heart:

1. By a demonstration of the world's vanity, so that the heart shall be prevailed upon simply to withdraw its regards from an object that is not worthy of it.

"When I surveyed all that I had accomplished and what I had toiled to achieve--everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun!" Ecclesiastes 2:11

"This world is passing away along with its desires!" 1 John 2:17

2. By setting forth another object, even Christ, as more worthy of its attachment, so that the heart shall be prevailed upon to exchange an old affection for a new one.

The best way to overcome the world, is not with morality or self-discipline. Christians overcome the world by seeing the beauty and excellence of Christ. They overcome the world by seeing something more attractive than the world--the Lord Jesus Christ!

"Yes, He is altogether lovely! This is my Beloved, and this is my Friend!" Song of Songs 5:16

Thanks for the admonition. We all need to be diligent in the proclamation of the gospel. Don't believe I am spending anytime arguing Democrat to Republican. Am asking Jim to back up his claim that he is disgusted with both parties earlier in this thread. Many, including myself, have stated that neither party is very good. I am just asking Jim to show when he showed any disdain for the Democrats.
Yeah, I understand. I think it's a bit of a waste of time though. It's like trying to make John Yurich see the error of his ways. We care, so we continue to punish ourselves eh? I suppose much prayer is needed for these poor souls so they can see the light and turn to God. What party we vote for won't be worth a hill of beans on Judgment Day.

rut roh, nobody is remembering Jim posting something where he showed disgust with the Democrats. Ball is in your court Jimbo, give us a post, there are 500 from which to choose, where you showed your disgust with the Democrats.
For Christians to spend so much time arguing Democrat to Republican, etc., is a major waste of time. The time wasted doing this, can be spent proclaiming the Gospel instead. One can't talk politics and be a light in the darkness at the same time.

ladybug, The operative word in John 1:12 is receive Him. My Baptist Church teaches the biblical doctrine of salvation. Look up the Statement of Faith of my Baptist Church at rolchastings.org and you will find out what my Baptist Church teaches about how salvation is received.
How do you reconcile the verses I just gave you then? Are you saying the Bible is lying? Or are you? It's one or the other.

Since when does God force salvation on any sinner? The Holy Spirit is the one who urges individuals to receive salvation. But it is up to the individual to choose or not choose to receive salvation. That is basic Baptist teaching.
Romans 9

15 For he saith to Moses, ***I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion***.

16 ***So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy***.

Please read with understanding. It is not because man wills, nor works but it's from God who shows mercy.Very simple and straight forward John. Will you accept the Bible or continue to embrace your version of scripture?

ladybug, The Holy Spirit urges sinners to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior but the individual has the free will to either give in to the urging of the Holy Spirit and receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior or to not abide the urging of the Holy Spirit. For several years prior to November 1997(when I received salvation by receiving Jesus as my Lord and Savior) I was not giving in to the urging of the Holy Spirit to receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior. But in November 1997 I made the decision to give in to the urging of the Holy Spirit to receive salvation.
Okay everyone, let's hail John Yurich as God from now on, because obviously HE is sovereign. If a human being has the power to stay God's hand and say no, then my goodness, God is nothing more than a door to door salesman whom you can slam the door shut in his face if you don't like his pitch.

Wow! Gotta love all the Christ-like behavior being thrown around on this site lately! Really helping our testimony! Good job everyone!

Yeah...and Janet says, if I mention her name, I get 50% off of their work! Plus an Oak City hat and t-shirt! I think everyone should get their houses redone by Janet!

Hey! I used to hang out in the library. We used to have a smoking wall at our school where the kids would hang out and smoke. Everyone accepted it as such and us dorks and geeks would stay clear, unless we wanted an atomic wedgie or something. Now it's all out in the open, and it seems the authority figures of the world are basically powerless to do anything about it.

So the initial colony, the men who fought for America's Independence, the men who fought in the Civil War, World War 1, World War 2, Vietnam, etc. had a mental health issue?
That's an interesting proposal, and by interesting I mean that it is a wild, illogical, anti-intellectual, disrespectful, thankless, idea that has no basis in reality, truth, history, or logic, and it is simply laughable.
Well, when there's a crash in the middle of the night and someone is walking around the house, I can guarantee this man with the supposed "mental health" issue will be called upon to investigate and protect. These panty-waists today would get on their phones and cry out for someone to help them. Yes, the times are definitely a changin'. Soon men will be wearing wigs, fake moles, lace and tights.

I try. John, you must look at yourself in the mirror on a daily basis with supreme confidence. This is the only explanation for your obstinance.

It is my earnest prayer that your eyes are opened to the truth of the Gospel and your need to be saved by Christ (with no help from you or that Baptist church you attend).

No, sin is.
Ugh...and I suppose femininity isn't? It's a full on onslaught against men.One day, very soon (perhaps 10 years for now), the whole idea of a man will be foreign for most people. "I read about them once."

Well, as far as my house goes, my wife and I will train our boys to be real, moral, God-fearing men. They will be strong and courageous and if God saves them, then they will stand for the Gospel, no matter the cost. No man on earth will stop that from happening.

Quite the judge and jury, aren't you, JaG.
I smoke several packs a day, I try to at least, and I sleep with a hookah tube in my mouth in case I wake up and want a puff. I always have at least half a can of Copenhagen in my mouth, too, so I'm spitting all day, wherever I go, on the sidewalks, cars...everywhere.
I don't know why any of this would bother anyone when they can easily purchase and wear a respirator while out and about.
On a more serious note, vaping...I think the reason it's claimed to be a safe alternative, is because it was too new for any true, long term studies to say otherwise. Not only do the oils have chemicals as well, although not as many or as toxic as tobacco perhaps, but it's an oil, and that will coat the lungs. I believe that long term vaping will in fact have serious consequences, or at least lead to some sort of health concerns.
It seems to me that if something comes along that is deadly, society embraces it. Everything is truly turned upside down in the world, isn't? Sad.

Romans 1

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. ***24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:*** 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. ***26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another***; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet...

Homosexuality is a curse sent from God.

Son of Charles Stanley eh? Makes sense.

Jesus spoke about unity but spoke about division as well. Sometimes one can't help but divide when speaking the truth. Just look at this site. We must focus on sound doctrine or the devil will end up running rough-shod all over the church. We see this in the body today. Whether we see the enemy's influence in the bride or the mainstream church, he is still making inroads...thus the great falling away is in full swing.
