According to Jewish wedding tradition, they always had fermented wine. If he had made grape juice and not wine, the master of the feast would have said something. Also, the greek word for drunk in John 2:10 is methuo which means to be drunken or intoxicated. Its the same word Peter used in Acts 2:15 to defend against the accusation of being drunk. That should really put an end to the argument, but I suspect it won't. The Bible is pretty clear from cover to cover that wine is a fermented drink that can intoxicate you. Besides, like Steve pointed out, they had no way to preserve grape juice without fermenting it since they didn't have refrigerators back then. |
