Three reasons to show mercy to people: 1) If you don’t, you won’t get mercy from God. Favoritism is merciless judging. We must evaluate people, but doing so without mercy is sin. And excuses won’t fly because the standard for judgment will be whether or not you really kept the law of love (you didn’t pick and choose which parts to obey, as in the case of favoritism. The plus/minus approach is invalid). If you stumble at one point, you have broken the entire law because there is only one law and only one lawgiver. So live your life in light of Judgment Day (Christians will face judgment). 2) If you do, you will get mercy from God, because it will prove you have received mercy from God (and are therefore saved). There are degrees of God’s mercy in this life that are conditioned on whether you are merciful. 3) If you do, you will have freedom – God’s law is good for you! Everything in creation shows us mercy. Shouldn’t we also?
