1:17 God is a God of justice. 1:18 God is a God of wrath against sin. 1:19 Man is not ignorant this. 1:20 God has made this known from the beginning; therefore, man is without excuse. 1:21 Man is so sinful since the fall, that though he knows this, he will not glorify God nor thank God apart from the intervention of God in power and Godhead. 1:22 And being without excuse, fallen man tried to use every argument against the truth but only proved to be foolish. 1:23 The foolishness of ungodly and unrighteous man offered to idols the honor and homage due to God alone. 1:24 Because man deserted God, God deserted man and “gave them up” to impurity of their lusts. 1:25 This is v23 reemphasized in a slightly different manner. 1:26-27 Because man deserted God, God deserted man and “gave them up” to degrading, disgraceful passions; that ultimately and specifically the illustration of the extent of this vile affection is homosexuality.
A general and cursory understanding of sin does not have the teeth to really bite into the truth, so to speak. We hear many people quote Rom 3:23 these days, but we hear so very few of them quoting Rom 1:26-32. The fall of man brought such total depravity, such complete corruption to the human condition, that when we hear about sin, it doesn't convict us because it is so general; the general truth doesn't penetrate us.
