This is more of a soliloquy than a sermon because I found myself deeply trouble over the Lord Jesus' admonition regarding Publicizing Private Piety in Matthew 6:1-18. We need to be secretive about our giving, about our praying, and about our fasting. That's a tough call for pastors because the world sees us as "Professional Good Men."
Our Lord's words in Matthew 5:16 about letting our light shine before others in such a way that they glorify our Heavenly Father offers us some help in resolving this.
That being said, this passage remains a spiritual tightrope that we are called to walk and walk with Holy Spirit enabled self-examination: what is my motivation? I have to ask that question even about the best things I do. How much more of everything else.
