There is a good deal of confusion, even among the followers of Christ, on the issue of judging. Invariably, when someone in a prominent public position is found to have engaged in immoral behavior, and some call for consequences and accountability, the cry is heard in response: 'Judge not, that you be not judged.' What did Jesus mean by those words? Is He saying it is never proper for us to judge, in any sense, for any reason? The fact is, we are called in Scripture to judge things, to judge what is right and what is wrong, to judge who is right or wrong in disputes, and to judge whether someone who teaches God's Word is doing so faithfully or not. This message suggests four things that Jesus meant when He urged us not to judge: We should not have a judgemental spirit; we should not make our word a law to others; we should not make rash judgements; we should not attempt to judge another's heart or intentions; we should deal with our own sin before trying to help another deal with his.
