We must live in obedience to God (His word), as a sign that the future that God has promised will be fulfilled. Sometimes God wants us to live in a way that is costly and does not make sense. In this passage, Jeremiah is in prison (he can receive visitors but he cannot leave). It made no sense to Jeremiah that God is telling him to purchase his cousin’s land. There are times when God tells us that we are supposed to do something but we don’t know how we know it will happen. Sometimes we will not hear correctly, however God always knows what will happen. God is sovereign, He is in control. We need to be at peace knowing that God is on the throne. In order to prepare Jeremiah to do the right thing, God spoke to Jeremiah so that he did God’s will. God will do whatever it takes to make His will clear to anyone who desires to do His will. However, we must not be a double minded person, we must do His will when He reveals it. It is okay to ask God why He wants us to do things, after we do them. We are to live right now in a way that reflects that future that God has promised. If we really believe the Good News, we need to live like it.
