Psalm 136 is known as "The Great Hallel,", i.e., the great Psalm of Yahweh's covenant love for his people. V. 1-3 and v. 26 provide the enveloping (inclusio) of the command to give thanks to God for his steadfast love. There are four sections giving testimony to his steadfast, indefatigable, love:
4-9: God's Creative Activity 10-16: The Exodus (Saving Activity) 17-22: The Conquest of Canaan (Fulfillment of promise) 23-25: Summation of God's demonstrations of faithfulness to his Covenant Love.
Because of who God is, and what he's done in history, is how we view our present circumstances and are able to give thanks to the LORD. He loves his people so he will complete what he began. Praise the LORD!
