Title: Unethical Christianity A Survey of 1 Corinthians Part 4
I Corinthians 6:1-11
Introduction: chapter reaches a peak, in the moral and ethical disaster that prevailed at the Corinthian church.
Theological Note: The Use of the Law Jesus & Paul did not use the Law as a prescription, but as a sign post to expose sin, a warning to curtail it and the standard of God's will.
1. The law is good but unreachable to us. It shows us that we need Christ.
2. The law will restrain evil. Romans 13
3. The law reveals what is pleasing to God.
The issues at stake: theft & fraud among believers.
The Prescribed Remedy: >Stop doing it >Do not bring another believer to court >A positive command: Suffer being wronged, suffer being defrauded. The gospel ethics Matthew 5:38 ff
The Law reminds us that without holiness no one will see God.
The standard will not be lowered. We need the Gospel as the remedy for sin.
The reminder of the Gospel: "such were some of you" Colossians 1:13 You were washed, sanctified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Sanctification happens because the Gospel happened
We obey because we are pleasing to God (the consequence of redemption) and not in order to be pleasing to Him.
