John Colet was born in 1466 or 7, the eldest son of the Lord Mayor of London. Graduating at Oxford in 1490, he travelled on the Continent from 1493 to 1496, where, greatly impressed with the ‘new learning’ of the humanists, he had the courage to turn his back on the hair-splitting logic of the scholastics which had dominated the medieval Church for centuries.
