Error in regard to what is truth and the teaching of God's word permeated the Church in the early days. As God has chosen to reveal Himself through His word and work in the lives of people through His word, His word has been the target of the Devil. Attempts to distort, corrupt, and mix in lies have been ongoing since the fall. This short letter is written to give such a warning to believers of the need to constantly and continually be learning His word, living out His word, and standing for His word. The author, who identifies himself as a slave of Christ was not only a brother of James but also the half-brother of Jesus Christ. The significance in his life and the impetus for his writing comes from who he is as a slave to Christ and being so, serves Him and writes under His authority. Jude had grown up with Christ but it wasn't until after His resurrection that he believed in Him and thus, became His slave. He writes because of the danger false teaching is to believers individually and the church corporately. The warning continues to be needed to be sounded and heeded in the days at hand as apostasy is one of the ongoing assaults on the church, from within.
