Our text for this morning is not about death or funerals. It is not even directly a passage about friendship directly. But I believe our text does speak of the blessing of covenant life. God in His amazing grace has shown us mercy not only in saving us from our spiritual death and rebellion but also now in the fellowship that we now enjoy with Him through His continued grace to us. We were created so that we might enjoy God more than anything. And we have also been created to enjoy the blessing of true friendship and fellowship with other people. Sadly there are often many things that keep us from this true friendship. I don't intend to offer advice on how to restore any and all relationships. But I do think we see from this text the basis for true friendship and relationships. God calls us to the blessing of covenant life. We live first in covenant with God because He has chosen to save us and restore us to true relationship. We then are to live in covenant faithfulness with others that the Lord has placed in our lives. We will look at the second half of chapter 21 in two parts. First, from verses 22-32a, God calls us to live as much as possible to live in peace with others. Second, from verses 32b-34, God calls us to wisely use the times of peace He gives to us.
