These chapters finish up the account of Israel's three month journey to Sinai. Their pattern of grumbling continues and sadly they will spend 40 years "wandering" in the wilderness according to God's plan and purposes. Time and again they face situations that are another opportunity to trust God as their Provider - yet they have yet to learn and choose to grumble as they test the Lord. Almost on a daily basis they challenge God to prove that He is among them and will take care of their needs. The question for us is - do we do the same?
We also have great light shed on the fact that Moses' life is consumed with the Lord and his service to Him. As his family joins the Israelites, Moses will receive some needed counsel from His father-in-law. The need for the people to have an arbitrator and have disputes settled has become more demanding than Moses has the time to provide. Some of this responsibility delegated to godly men and Moses can be involved in the difficult disputes and be the "people's representative before God" as needed. As they come to Sinai God will give them the Law so they will have specific instruction from Him on all aspects of their lives - moral, civil and religious. They are the only nation chosen by God to be His people in unique and eternal relationship that looks forward to the Kingdom He will establish.
