Third John could be described as the last of the Pastoral Epistles! We usually reserve that description for 1-2 Timothy and Titus, but it also describes 3 John, a letter from the “elder” to “the beloved Gaius” who is undoubtedly part of the same eldership.
First John outlines John's basic teaching.
Second John applies it to the elect lady (the city church, probably of Ephesus).
Third John helps us to see how the elders are to put it into practice.
