There are numerous types/shadows of Christ in the Old Testament, but Melchizedek is one of the most interesting, because he's the only type that some some scholars think is actually Christ: a theophany or christophany, (an Old Testament appearance of Jesus).
Melchizedek is so important, because he demonstrates Jesus can be our High Priest even though He's from Judah (the kingly tribe), versus Levi (the priestly tribe). Psalm 110:4 says regarding the Messiah, "You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." Jesus is a priest according to the order Melchizedek, versus part of the Levitical priesthood. Because of Abraham's interaction with Melchizedek in Genesis 14:18-20, we see the priesthood of Melchizedek is superior. The author of Hebrews wants the Jews to embrace Jesus as their High Priest and he builds his argument around Melchizedek.
