Puritan preacher John Winthrop declared on board the Arbella in 1630, as he spoke to his fellow colonists, "We must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.”
Whether that's true of the US or not, Jesus didn’t say, “The USA is the salt of the earth and the light of the world.” The good news is not good government and political freedom.
The better news is that the church preserves, seasons, and illuminates the world.
So do good works. Let your saltiness change the world; reflect the light of Christ to illuminate the world.
