III WHAT IS TRUE REPENTANCE 1. A change of mind (metanoia) that involves regret over sin, hating of sin, and turning to Christ and living in obedience to him : Change, turning and sorrow. 2. You can be sorry and remorseful without being repentant. 3. Both faith and repentance are needed in evangelism, which translates into Jesus as Lord and Savior. He cannot save you and then you continue to live in sin.
IV PRACTICAL ISSUES A. Some conversion are dramatic, some are not. B. Must not confuse repentance with reformation - behavioral change is a consequence, not the essence of repentance C. Repentance does not mean the absence of a relapse into sin - sin can be a hindrance or a thorn. D. Constant confession and cleansing are regular part of Christian walk. E. God's discipline is continuing part of Christian life - is pruning and corrective - not punitive. Designed to make us more like Christ. F. "Make a decision for Christ" can only be done after gospel has been expounded and sin has been addressed and the law has been explained. Decision is then to repent and believe. G. "Saying a Prayer" is NOT a synonym for conversion. Prayer is only a sign of what has already taken place in the heart.
CONCLUSION: 1. Repentance and belief is duty of every man. 2. Gospel MUST be presented accurately but simply. 3. Cannot be gospel preaching separated from person, life, death, rising of Christ.
