As we conclude the short series on How Humans Think, we come to grips with the need we all have regularly to have our thinking cleansed (Ephesians 5:26) -- brainwashing with the Word.
Allowing Christ's word richly to dwell in us is one side of a coin. The other side is our being continually filled with God's Holy Spirit. The Word and the Spirit can never be disconnected.
Ephesians 5:18 and Colossians 3:16 are parallel, and they illustrate the characteristics, fruit, and means of our being filled with the Holy Spirit. Our richly flooding our minds with God's Word and being filled with the Spirit will involve five things according the Ephesians 5:18-21: (1) Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, (2) Singing, (3) Making Melody in your heart to the Lord, (4) Giving thanks always for all things to God, and (5) Submitting to one another.
If we would live in peace and joy, we must continually and self-consciously deal with rebellion against the authorities that God has placed over us.
