The Reformation came about amid the Humanist movement. At first some identified the Reformers as humanists because all were concerned to reform the Church. But in reality there was a profound difference, a difference between Heaven and Hell. The one emphasized morality and thus the need was a new example. The other emphasized the reception of a new doctrine (really the renewed proclamation of the NT gospel) as the great need of man. We also give some thoughts on this subject from an unrecorded sermon by Dr. John McKnight.
