When you sin against a person, you might acknowledge it, ask forgiveness, and resolve the situation. This is good. But what motivated you? Maybe you just want things to run more smoothly in your life. You don't want all the drama with the person you offended. If that's true, then confession of sin was just a tool to be used for your own purpose. You haven't understood that your sin is primarily against God. Once you understand your sinfulness, the work of God is no longer hindered in your life. You begin to understand your own need for grace and peace. It's at this point that you appreciate the titles God gives you in the first two verses of Philippians this evening. We are bondservants, saints, and children of God our Father. We are recipients of both grace and peace. Another way to put it is that we are slaves, saints, and sons.
