It is a simple truth that men will only pay for what they really value.
Talk is cheap. People go about all the time talking about how much they value the noble things, how much they love truth and honor.
But we only discover what a man really values when we find out the limit of what price he will pay to get them.
A happy marriage, well trained children, political freedom, quality in business - people all claim they want, even demand, these things. But they aren't willing to pay the price to get them.
What that reveals is, they value the price more than the thing they say they value.
Political freedom is costly. Patrick Henry said that he would exchange his very life to obtain liberty, and many patriots did just that. But do men today value their liberty like our founders did?
Jesus illustrated this principle in the matter of eternal things when He confronted the cheapness of the rich young ruler, who asked what he had to do to obtain everlasting life.
Of course, there's nothing a man can do of himself to escape death, but Jesus played along with him to show just how little he actually wanted it. Jesus told him to give all his wealth to the poor and follow him in exchange for eternal life.
The man was very sorry to discover that he wouldn't, in fact, exchange his wealth for eternal life. He couldn't stand to pay the price of poverty in this life for the riches of glory.
He claimed to love everlasting life, he just wasn't willing to pay for it.
Truth is, the price is far higher even than that. There is no cost we can pay to escape death! All that we have cannot free us from its grip.
Praise God He was willing to pay the price for our souls!
