1. Prerequisites of the work of atonement a. Active Obedience b. Passive Obedience i. He suffered all of His life ii. He suffered at the cross 1. Wrath of god 2. Forsaken by the father 3. Physically 2. What are the different aspects of the Atonement? 4 elements to consider. a. The sacrifice or expiation because we are guilty and deserving death over our sins (Heb 9:26) b. Propitiation because we are under the wrath of God because of sin. Christ received the wrath of God on the cross. Therefore, we are no longer the object of His wrath. (Rom 3:25, He 2:17;1Jn 4:10) c. Reconciliation because we are enemies and separated from God because of Sin. Christ reconciled us to God in his death and brings us back to the fellowship with him (Rom 5:8-11, 2Cor 5:18-20) d. Redemption because we are slaves to sin and Satan. By paying the prices of our rescue (the ransom) Christ redeemed us (purchased) from sin (Heb 2:15, Col 1:13) i. Guilt ii. Condemnation iii. Power iv. Presence Conclusion This subject ought to affect not just our understanding but our emotions in a particular way. Every subject in scripture should do the same but nothing does it as the glorious theme of Christ's Atonement. This is a discussion about salvation ad the price it took to accomplish t. This is something that goes farther than our ability, eternity had to be locked in with time, the infinite merge with the finite, the immortal with mortality as the Son of God became man and gave His life to rescue the world (John 3:16, 1Jn 2:1)
