About 25 years ago, I heard a message on King Hezekiah when I was a student at the U of I. This message preached by my pastor at the time, Mike Shea, has stuck with me for more than half my life. I don't remember all the details of the sermon but what I have remembered is the example of King Hezekiah going into the temple with the threatening letter from Sennacherib. This account is such a beautiful example and encouragement in prayer. I love sharing this powerful account. As a church we are calling for a day of prayer this coming Wednesday. The Illinois Family Institute is also calling for a day of prayer.
As I have stated many times before, every week a minister could say from the pulpit we all need to pray more and read our Bible's more. Beating people on the head with prayer and Bible reading is easy for a minister to do. Of course, I must first confess my own failures. I don't expect that you will remember this message 25 years later. What I hope will stick with you is the encouragement in God's Word to come often before our great God in prayer. There are at least 370 references to prayer in Scripture. This would be just a minimum, because Scripture uses other words to describe prayer. So obviously the subject of prayer is so vast that no single message will capture everything that can and should be said. Though we will be looking at the account of King Hezekiah part of the encouragement and our confidence in prayer comes from Romans 8, though there is overlap. Your confidence in prayer is the continued intercession of Jesus Christ and His rule over His church and kingdom. If God did not spare His Son will He not with Him also freely give us all things?
