Have you been hearing (or speaking) the usual new year's clichés? “I can't believe it is 2011 already.” “Time seems to just fly by.” Our sense of time moving swiftly is explained in our text this week.
Tomorrow morning we will begin our new year by studying Psalm 90 which is a Psalm of Moses which contrasts God's eternity with mankind's mortality.
Moses laments not only that life is very brief (passing like a sigh), but also that it is often full of sorrow. Moses explains that human sin is the reason that our lives are short and difficult.
Finally, Moses pleads with God to redeem our short lives. The answer to Moses' prayer comes as our eternal God enters into our finite fallen world through the incarnation, and bears the penalty of our sin so that we can be set free from our guilt and mortality and share in God's eternity.
