In Gethsemane we see our Lord’s fearful isolation, being humanly deserted in his time of great need. Where he might have expected at least support and sympathy, he found only sleep. Then there is his awful burden, as he was gradually pressed to the dust of the earth he made by the increasing pressure of the sin of his people upon his soul and the immediate sense and looming prospect of drinking the cup of his Father’s righteous judgments against that sin. In the light of this, we hear his anguished prayer in which he pleaded with his Father to spare him the cup if it were possible. Finally, we note his holy resolve, whereby he embraced the will of God out of love for both his Father and his people. From this we draw lessons regarding the sinfulness of sin, the horrors of impending judgment upon those apart from Jesus, and the blessings of salvation for his redeemed ones.
