In this passage, God gives us an amazing promise. If we see a brother (a fellow Christian) sinning in any way that is not the sin leading to death (the unforgivable sin, which if committed, would make him not a true brother), then we should pray for that brother and God will give him life. What does this mean? Since the brother already has eternal life, then the life that is promised must be the life of sanctification -- specifically victory over that particular sin. Look long and hard at the promise and meditate on it. Then venture out in faith, take God at His Word, and begin to ask God to help specific brothers and sisters with specific sins you see them stuck in. And then watch and see how God answers your prayers. How the church might be transformed and make great progress in holiness if we would only believe these words and practice them!
