In the deliverance of a little boy from the terrible grip of evil we see the power of Christ in contrast to the powerlessness of His disciples. We see the patience of Jesus pushed to the very limit as He expresses again His weariness with the unbelief that confronted Him. We see the Lord descend from the mountain of transfiguration into a valley of faithlessness below and into the despair of a father anguishing over his suffering son.
Into that helpless and hopeless situation we see again the power of believing even when that believing is small and feels deeply inadequate. The father's faith is contrasted with the disciples' surprising lack of faith because they still did not understand who Jesus was and had forgotten that the power to deliver was not from them but from God.
