Each of us is in some way a prisoner. One of the definitions of prisoner is one whose liberty is restrained. Even though we may think we are free, are we? When we are born into this world we are born prisoners on death row. The sentence of death for sin has already been handed down on us. But Jesus will on a case by case basis hear our appeals and those who accept Him as savior will have their sentence changed to eternal life. This makes us the prisoner of Jesus. But we are still human and still sin. As such we become the prisoner of guilt. Satan standing there read to bring charges against us. Anything he can do to crush us and hurt the heart of God for His children. What we need to do is confess our sins to shed the shackles of guilt. But it is also possible to become the prisoner of self. Here we allow circumstances to paralyze us into inaction. Things that had looked so promising now seemingly torn to pieces. When this happens we must get to God and trust Him for cleansing and healing to come our way. At other times it is a matter of having to forgive someone who we just don't want to trust much less forgive. The choice however is ours to make. We can only be set free from being this captive when we choose to let go. If we decide to hold on for dear life we simply wrap ourselves tighter in the chains of self and rot away. To let go of self is to receive the cure that Jesus stands there ready to give us.
