This is the last Sunday before Christmas, and many Christians believe that Christmas is a special day for Christianity. But I think most people in our church know that the Bible never mentions Christmas. In fact, Jesus never talks about His birth or his childhood years, much less about Christmas. Only two gospels give an account of His birth (Matthew and Luke) while Mark and John do not mention it. Those accounts of His birth in the gospels teach us many things but they are relatively short in comparison to the rest of gospels. A few indicators here and there tell us that he would regularly attend Temple and synagogue worship. When young, he said to his parents (the only account of his childhood years), "I must be in my Father's house" (Lk. 2:49) and in Lk. 4 we read that it was Jesus' custom to go to the Synagogue on the Sabbath (Lk. 4:16). So, from his early years until his full maturity, he regularly went to church on the Sabbath!!!! Though Jesus might not have said anything about Christmas, he does tell us why He came. He was born and for about thirty years on earth he lived in obscurity. From His public ministry we learn why He came, why he was born, why He became incarnate! We can say that His mission is His Christmas message! In both passages, people grumbled (5:30; 19:7) because Jesus had table fellowship with them. In both passages, Jesus gave a similar response: "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." (5:32) & "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost " (19:10) Why Did Jesus Come? Why was He Born? 1. He came to call sinners to repentance (5:32). 2. He came to seek the lost (19:10). 3. He came to save the lost (19:10).
