As we attempt to engage an increasingly anti-Christian culture with the wonderful truths of the gospel, often times the first hurdle that must be crossed is the question of what is the authority for what we believe, and the first point that must be stressed is that the Bible, as preserved in the authorized Old and New Testaments, not only contains but IS is the very word of God; it is God's complete and final revelation of ultimate truth to mankind.
One typical objection that is raised by unbelievers is that the Bible is open to many divergent interpretations; but this objection is based on ignorance of what the scriptures say, and on the confusion caused by the failure of Christians themselves to recognize the sole authority of the scriptures or to apply sound rules of interpretation, which are also discussed in this message.
One of the most important rules of understanding God's word is the rule of OBEDIENCE; that is, if you want to truly know what God's word says you must be willing to obey it! The Lord Jesus made it clear in the Parable of the Sower as recorded in Matthew 13, Mark 4 and Luke 8 that (1) God's truth is privileged information; (2) that God conceals truth from some and reveals it to others; (3) that if we receive and obey the truth we are given God will reveal more truth to us; but (4) if we reject the light, God sends darkness. Ultimately, this is crux of the message: WHAT YOU DO WITH THE BIBLE DETERMINES WHAT GOD WILL DO WITH YOU.
