Charles Haddon Spurgeon once asked the question regarding 1 Peter 1:6:
"“Ye greatly rejoice,” and yet “ye are in Heaviness.” Is that possible? Can there be in the same heart great rejoicing, and yet a temporary heaviness?'"
His answer would surprise the natural man, it was "Most assuredly. This paradox has been known and felt by many of the Lord's children"
But Spurgeon did not end there he went on to comment how the simultaneous experience of Rejoicing and Heaviness is not only possible for the Christian but even *necessary.*
That view certainly does throw a spanner in the works of the 'Christians should always be happy' movement, and it should lead us to ask 'Is that true, and if so, why?'
