Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we come this evening to the final block of teaching in this letter to the Ephesians. Some commentators have likened this text to the pre-battle speech of a general encouraging his troops. But though the basic exhortation is the same — to stand firm in the battle — the motivation is really radical. Paul motivates us to stand not by promising us an easy victory, but rather by playing up the might of the enemy. Stand, because you face some truly horrific foes who will eat you for lunch unless you are clothed in the armor of God Himself! That, my friends, is the basic point of this passage. We face enemies that are far beyond us, but we face them while clad in the supernatural armor of God Almighty.
