Balaam had an absolute word from God: he was not to travel to Moab and he was not to curse Israel. However, when a more prestigious "pulpit committee" with a better "salary package" showed up, Balaam sought "clarification" from God, got "Plan B" and proceeded to Moab. But he angered God who now became his adversary.
When we know truth and disregard it by praying for a better understanding, it is not unlike a man who has just read the Ten Commandments praying for God to help him commit murder. Such prayers invite God to curse us with delusion and madness.
