As God reveals himself to his people throughout the Scriptures and in our own lives, fear is most often the immediate response. Confronted with our own sinfulness in the face of the holy, living God it is the only appropriate response. Yet God comes to us, not to invoke fear, but praise and worship; not to make us run or hide from his presence, but to draw us into his own family. This Sunday, as Christmas draws near, may we hear the gospel message summed up in the announcement given to the shepherds at the time of Jesus' birth: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." May we too be filled with great joy as we know this Saviour as Christ, our Lord.
