The history of Israel now picks up with the transition from the reign of David as his son Solomon is established as king.
The chapter opens with David feeling the effects of his older age and is provided with the 'customary' means for keeping warm. The woman chosen to minister to his personal needs will become significant later as his sons carry on after his death.
There becomes a power struggle between his oldest surviving son, Adonijah and Solomon, who has been chosen to assume the throne. As it unfolds the consequences of conflict and bloodshed continue in the family of David.
The account gives us three reasons for Adonijah's actions... 1. His father never asked him - he had never been disciplined by David. 2. He was very handsome - so a very attractive candidate before the nation in his appearance. 3. He was born after Absalom - he saw himself as being next in line to the throne in terms of natural succession.
Also the loyalty of key figures becomes exposed as some of men in David's cabinet shift there support to his son Adonijah in his attempted coup d'e-tat. At the heart of the matter is his rebellion against his father and ulltimately against God.
Points to ponder from this study include: 1. Life and strength pass quickly so we must serve the Lord while we can. 2. The consequences of sin can last a lifetime. 3. Sinful man will continue to attempt to thwart God's plan. 4. We shouldn't be surprised at the faithlessness of longtime friends and it doesn't change what is right.
