Paul was adamant that he had not attained the fullness of either relationship with or effectiveness for the Lord, but then he tells us of one thing that is vital for entering into and doing everything for which Jesus has taken hold of us for: we must forget about what is behind and reach out for what is ahead. This includes forgetting about our failures, but more in focus is forgetting about our past achievements for the Lord. Our effectiveness in the future is not fueled by what we've done in the past, but by a realization of our need for a deeper relationship with Jesus and to be more effective for Him. It is from this basis that we press forward and possess all that is our in Christ and thus glorifying Him. This is something that God has to open our eyes and heart to and He will do this as we bow to every word.
